Advanced Placement (AP) Biology is a rigorous course that is the equivalent of two semesters of undergraduate Biology in most college and universities. The curriculum has been developed by Princeton University and is demanding in scope and content. It is vital the strong academic skills be developed during this course to assure success at staying ahead. The course emphasizes the molecular, anatomical and ecological aspects of biology. It has been designed for students who wish to pursue a scientific career or students who desire an intellectual challenge. The successful completion of this course requires HARD WORK.
Your textbook is: Biology, 7th ed., by Campbell and Reece. Grading System: Report card grades will be calculated according to the following percentages:
Exams will be announced at least one week in advance when possible. If you are aware that an exam has been scheduled and you are absent on the day of the exam, you must take the exam the day you return to school. Failure to do so will result in a grade of zero for the exam. Students who are illegally absent during a test day will not be allowed to make-up the exam and a zero will automatically be assigned. Quizzes: Quizzes will include multiple-choice and short answer questions. Many of the quizzes will be what are known as quizicules...small quizzes given almost daily either on the material from the prior teaching class or on the material learned during the day of the quizicule. If you are legally absent, you do not make up the quiz. There will be plenty of them. If you are illegally absent, a zero is recorded. |
SCIENCE EXAM DAY IS WEDNESDAY QUIZZES CAN BE GIVEN ANY DAY
Laboratory Reports: The AP board requires a number of laboratory exercises. A full understanding of the mechanics of each experiment is expected, along with the proper collection and manipulation of data to support or refute your conclusions. A comprehensive laboratory report will be handed in for each lab in addition to a pre-lab quiz. See website AP Lab section for additional details. Weekly Syllabi – Weekly syllabi will be provided online through the calendar each Friday for the upcoming week. They will indicate upcoming topics of discussion, pages and questions in the text you are responsible for understanding, and various announcements including upcoming labs. Homework questions from the book will be in the syllabi. These do not need to be turned in, but may show up on milestone quizzes. Homework – Homework assignments will be quiz/test corrections for those people scoring below a 93 on a quiz or test. Chapters from the textbook being covered in class should be read and all questions from the chapters done, but this is not turned in. However, expect to see some of the questions on the quizicules.
